Where to stay in Guangzhou is mainly a question of which version of the city you want outside your hotel door. Recent local travel reports consistently favor bases beside a useful metro entrance over hotels that merely carry a central district name. In a hot, humid city, an extra 15-minute walk at both ends of the day matters.

Beijing Road and GongyuanqianFirst visits, old city, foodBusy and commercial at night
Liwan and Changshou RoadXiguan culture, dim sum, slower streetsOlder hotel stock varies
Zhujiang New TownModern hotels, skyline, familiesHigher prices and less old-city atmosphere
TianheRail connections, shopping, businessLarge blocks; check the exact metro exit
Pazhou and HaizhuCanton Fair and exhibitionsWeak base for a heritage-focused holiday

Beijing Road: the easiest first-time base

Beijing Road works because it keeps several kinds of Guangzhou within reach. You can reach Yuexiu heritage sites, Pearl River evenings, local restaurants, and metro interchanges without rebuilding the day around long transfers. It is the safest choice for two or three nights.

The weak point is noise and crowding. Check whether the room faces the pedestrian street, and confirm the walking route from Gongyuanqian or Beijing Lu station. A hotel shown as 500 meters away may still involve a large junction or underground passage.

Liwan: best for old Guangzhou and food

Stay near Changshou Road, Huangsha, or a practical edge of the Xiguan area if Enning Road, Yongqingfang, Shamian, and traditional food are the priority. The atmosphere is more local than Zhujiang New Town, and early breakfast is part of the appeal.

Liwan requires more hotel checking. Recent traveler reports repeatedly mention that the room, lift, soundproofing, and station exit matter more than the brand name. It is a strong choice for repeat visitors and food-led trips, but not every heritage-style property has international-hotel operations.

Zhujiang New Town: comfort and modern Guangzhou

Zhujiang New Town gives the smoothest access to large international hotels, Guangdong Museum, Huacheng Square, and Canton Tower views. Families and business travelers often find it easier because rooms, breakfast, taxis, and weather backups are predictable.

You will travel west for Xiguan and old-city days. That is acceptable on a longer stay, but less efficient if almost every planned stop is in Liwan or Yuexiu.

Tianhe and Guangzhou East Station

Tianhe is useful for shopping, business, and onward rail. It can also work for travelers who want modern dining and do not mind using the metro for heritage sights. The district is broad, so do not book on the district name alone. Measure the actual hotel entrance to the actual station entrance.

Pazhou: choose it for the fair, not the city break

Pazhou is the operational answer for Canton Fair exhibitors and visitors. Staying near the exhibition complex can save hours during major events. Outside that purpose, it places too much distance between you and the neighborhoods that make Guangzhou distinctive.

A practical booking checklist

Before paying, confirm the nearest metro line and exit, airport transfer after your flight time, hotel acceptance of international guests, room ventilation, and whether breakfast starts early enough for your plans. Ask for the address in Chinese for taxis.

If your stay includes Xiguan, use our Guangzhou old-town walking guide. For airport and station decisions, continue with how to get around Guangzhou.

Bottom line

Choose Beijing Road for the most balanced first visit, Liwan for food and old-city texture, Zhujiang New Town for modern comfort, Tianhe for business and rail, and Pazhou for the Canton Fair. In every area, the metro exit and final walking route are more important than the district label.
