Beijing 240-hour visa-free transit can support a stop of up to 10 days for eligible travelers, but it is not a general visa waiver. The itinerary must transit through mainland China to a third country or region, and final admission is decided by immigration authorities.

The route rule comes first
Your route must follow this pattern:
Country or region A → mainland China → country or region B
A and B must be different for transit purposes. A simple return such as United States → Beijing → United States does not meet that structure. Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan are treated as separate regions for this route analysis, subject to the current rules and your documents.
Core eligibility
The National Immigration Administration’s current policy page says eligible travelers need:
- nationality from a currently eligible country
- a valid international travel document
- confirmed onward travel to a third country or region within 240 hours
- compliance with the designated entry ports and permitted stay areas
- approval by immigration inspection at the port
The eligible-country list and port list have changed before. Check the current NIA version rather than relying on an old article or screenshot.
Beijing entry ports and travel area
Current official materials include Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport among the relevant ports. Beijing has historically operated in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei permitted area; confirm the current appendix on the NIA announcement before booking cross-region travel.
Do not assume the policy allows unrestricted travel throughout China. Your arrival, stay, and departure must fit the official port and permitted-area rules.
How the 240 hours are counted
Official guidance states that the visa-free stay generally begins at 00:00 on the day after entry. This can create more clock time than a literal 240 hours from landing, but flight timing is not guaranteed and border authorities control the admission record. Build margin before the outbound departure.
Documents to keep accessible
- passport with sufficient validity
- confirmed onward ticket and itinerary
- entry permission or visa for the next destination when required
- Beijing accommodation details
- arrival-card information
- evidence that the route is a genuine transit
Keep these as offline screenshots or PDFs as well as inside airline apps. A short connection, weak roaming connection, or account login problem should not prevent you from showing the onward segment and accommodation address.
Airline staff may examine eligibility before boarding, and immigration can request supporting documents after arrival.
Transit policy versus ordinary visa-free entry
China also has mutual and unilateral visa-free arrangements for some nationalities. Those are separate legal routes with different conditions. Use the policy that actually matches your passport and itinerary; do not combine the most favorable parts of two different programs.

Test the itinerary before paying
Write the route on one line using airport codes and countries or regions, then check each element against the current official list. Confirm that the inbound origin and outbound destination differ, both flights use eligible ports, the onward booking falls inside the allowed stay, and every planned side trip remains inside the permitted area.
When tickets are separate, carry both confirmations and allow enough time for baggage and check-in. A route that appears valid on a map can still fail because of the ticket documentation, airport, permitted area, passport, or next-destination entry rules.
After the legal route passes that test, run an arrival test: confirm which airport you use, how you will reach the registered accommodation, whether reception is open, and how you will make the first transport payment. This operational layer does not create eligibility, but it prevents an eligible stop from becoming an avoidable arrival problem.

Does a round trip through Beijing qualify?
Not when the country or region before and after mainland China is the same. The onward destination must create a qualifying A-China-B transit route under the current policy.
Can I enter at one eligible port and leave from another?
The policy may allow movement among eligible ports inside the permitted area, but the exact pair and route must match the current official appendix. Confirm the plan before buying non-refundable tickets.
Is approval guaranteed if my itinerary appears eligible?
No. Airline boarding checks and immigration admission remain discretionary. Carry clear onward travel, accommodation, passport validity, and next-destination documents, and keep a backup plan.
