Chengdu 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit: Eligibility and Route Rules
Chengdu 240-hour visa-free transit can be used by eligible travelers, but this is not a general visa waiver. The trip must transit through mainland China to a third country or region, use eligible ports, and stay within the permitted area.
Our local-platform research is used here only for operational questions such as TFU versus CTU, late airport transfers, accommodation details, and mobile payment readiness. The legal test comes exclusively from current National Immigration Administration material.
The route must be a real transit
The required structure is:
Country or region A → mainland China → country or region B
A and B must differ for transit purposes. A return such as Australia → Chengdu → Australia does not satisfy that structure. Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan are treated as separate regions for route analysis, subject to current rules and your documents.
Core eligibility
The National Immigration Administration says eligible travelers need a currently eligible nationality, valid international travel document, confirmed onward arrangements to a third country or region within 240 hours, and compliance with the designated ports and stay areas. Immigration officers make the admission decision.
The list changes. Indonesia was added in 2025, and the port list has also expanded. Always use the latest NIA page.
Chengdu ports
Current NIA materials list Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport for the 240-hour policy. Tianfu was added during the December 2024 expansion. Verify both the port and Sichuan’s current permitted stay area in the appendix to the latest NIA announcement.
Do not assume an itinerary may continue freely to every province. A domestic side trip must remain inside the policy’s permitted areas and fit an eligible exit plan.
How the time is counted
Official guidance states that the stay generally begins at 00:00 on the day after entry. Do not use that as a reason to book the outbound flight at the last possible minute. Delays, airport transfer time, and immigration decisions require margin.
Documents to keep accessible
- passport with sufficient validity
- confirmed onward ticket and itinerary
- entry permission for the next destination when required
- Chengdu accommodation details
- arrival-card information
- evidence that the route is a genuine transit
Keep offline copies of the onward booking, hotel address in Chinese, and next-destination permission. Do not depend on opening an airline app after landing.
Separate tickets can work only if the itinerary still satisfies the policy and officers accept the proof. Airlines may apply their own document checks before boarding.
Transit versus ordinary visa-free entry
Some passports may qualify for a mutual or unilateral visa-free arrangement. That is a separate policy with different conditions. Determine which legal route applies to your trip instead of mixing them.
Common mistakes
- Booking A → Chengdu → A.
- Confusing TFU and CTU or using a non-eligible port.
- Planning a side trip outside the permitted area.
- Assuming a 10-day visit is guaranteed.
- Leaving too little margin before the outbound flight.
- Using an old country or port list.
Test the complete Chengdu route
Write the itinerary as origin → Chengdu airport → onward country or region, including the airport codes and departure dates. Then confirm that the route is a genuine transit, the passport nationality remains eligible, the entry and exit ports appear in the current list, and every side trip stays inside the permitted area.
If the itinerary uses both TFU and CTU, include the cross-city transfer in the schedule. When separate tickets are involved, carry both confirmations and allow for baggage collection and a new check-in. Do not use a tight final-day connection simply because the policy allows a longer maximum stay.
Then test the first night: which airport terminal you reach, whether metro or airport bus still operates, where the official ride-hailing pickup is, and whether the hotel can receive and register a foreign passport at that hour. These checks do not affect legal eligibility, but they address the arrival failures travelers report most often.
Once eligibility is confirmed, use where to stay in Chengdu and the Chengdu booking guide to plan the stop. For a coordinated short visit, see private Chengdu planning support.
Official verification
This guide summarizes NIA information checked on July 12, 2026. The current announcement lists 55 eligible countries and 65 ports. Verify your passport, route, port, permitted area, and onward ticket with the National Immigration Administration, 12367, the relevant Chinese embassy or consulate, and your airline before departure.
FAQ about Chengdu visa-free transit
Does a return flight through Chengdu qualify?
Not when the country or region before and after mainland China is the same. The itinerary needs a qualifying A-China-B route under current rules.
Can I enter through Tianfu and leave through Shuangliu?
Both airports appear in current official materials, but the exact route must fit the latest port and permitted-area rules. Confirm the airport pair before buying non-refundable tickets.
Is the 240-hour stay guaranteed?
No. Eligibility does not remove airline document checks or the immigration officer’s admission decision. Carry clear onward travel, accommodation details, and next-destination documents.
