Chongqing 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Guide
China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy can make Chongqing a practical stop between two countries or regions. It is conditional transit permission, not a blanket visa exemption, and immigration makes the final decision at arrival.

Start with the A-China-B rule
Your journey must arrive in China from one country or region and depart to a different country or region. A return route such as United Kingdom-Chongqing-United Kingdom does not normally qualify. United Kingdom-Chongqing-Thailand can meet the route pattern if the traveler and documents satisfy every other rule.
Hong Kong and Macao can count as separate regions in a qualifying itinerary. The onward booking must be confirmed, and you must be admissible to the next destination.
Chongqing’s eligible port and permitted area
The current National Immigration Administration framework lists 55 eligible nationalities and 65 ports. Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is included. The permitted area shown for the Chongqing arrangement is Chongqing Municipality.
That boundary matters. Do not use a Chongqing transit admission as automatic permission for a side trip to Chengdu or another province. Check the current NIA 240-hour policy guide and official port and area list for your exact route.
Documents to carry
Prepare your valid passport, confirmed onward ticket departing within the allowed period, hotel details, full itinerary, and any visa or authorization required by the onward destination. Keep digital and offline copies.
Separate tickets can work only when the route remains clear and documented, but they add connection risk. Leave enough time for airline checks, immigration, baggage, and possible schedule changes.
Arrival at Jiangbei Airport
Follow the airport signs for temporary entry or visa-free transit and ask staff if the lane is unclear. Present the complete onward route rather than only the next boarding pass. After admission, rail transit reaches central areas; a licensed taxi or arranged transfer is easier with luggage or a late arrival.
Recent arrival reports emphasize practical preparation: save the hotel name in Chinese, know which terminal and pickup zone you need, and do not depend on airport Wi-Fi for every document.
Common mistakes
- Booking a same-country return instead of a third-country route.
- Assuming nationality alone guarantees entry.
- Planning Chengdu or Sichuan without checking the permitted area.
- Using a non-eligible entry or exit port.
- Misreading 240 hours as an automatically approved ten-day holiday.
- Arriving without a confirmed onward seat or accessible hotel details.
A realistic Chongqing transit plan
Three full days are enough for the central peninsula, Liziba and Eling, and one Nan’an walking route. Wulong uses a full day and should only be added when the flight buffer is comfortable. Keep the final day near the city and avoid a remote excursion before departure.
