Guangzhou local specialties reflect a city where a small food gift is often called shouxin, or 手信. Cantonese pastries are the easiest place to start, but decorative crafts and contemporary local design also belong in the picture. Choose for flavor and usefulness first: a handsome box is only a good gift when the person receiving it wants what is inside.
Our short list: For a savory-sweet taste, sample chicken biscuits before buying a box. For someone who likes rich dessert fillings, compare lotus-seed pastries. Water-chestnut starch is for a person who cooks; a contemporary Cantonese design is a better choice when food ingredients are difficult to match.

What is worth a closer look?
Chicken biscuits / 鸡仔饼
The name can puzzle visitors expecting a sweet chicken-shaped cookie. Chicken biscuits are a savory-sweet Cantonese pastry category, and recipes can include pork fat, nuts and fermented flavors. They make a better purchase after tasting than as a blind gift. Ask to see the ingredient list rather than assuming that a bakery counter implies a vegetarian product.
Before buying: Buy a small quantity and compare texture. For a recipient avoiding pork or nuts, choose another product unless the exact pack’s ingredients meet their needs.
Lotus-seed and Cantonese pastries / 莲蓉饼 / 广式糕点
Pastry counters offer gifts for people who like rich fillings, flaky textures and something to eat with tea. Lotus-seed pastries, wife cakes and assorted biscuits are different choices rather than interchangeable boxes. Egg-yolk, meat and dairy ingredients can change both dietary suitability and travel decisions. A sample assortment is useful when you have not tasted the range before.
Before buying: Ask which products are sold fresh and which are sealed for longer storage. Count the usable portions, not simply the number of compartments in the box.
Water-chestnut starch / 马蹄粉
A labelled packet of water-chestnut starch is a cooking gift for someone who enjoys making desserts. It offers a different proposition from a ready-to-eat slab of water-chestnut cake, which may have particular storage needs. Check whether the packet is pure starch or a prepared dessert mix; a picture of the finished cake does not tell you what is actually in the bag.
Before buying: Choose only if the recipient wants to cook with it. Photograph or translate the preparation directions while the seller can answer questions.
Cantonese craft and city design / 广绣 / 广府文创
Embroidery-inspired accessories, Cantonese opera motifs and local architectural illustrations give non-food options. Guangzhou’s official city-gift selection spans heritage crafts and contemporary design. The useful question is how the item was made: an embroidered surface, a printed pattern and a mass-produced souvenir can all be attractive, but should be described and priced differently.
Before buying: Inspect fasteners, edges and fiber labels. Pick a design connected to a place or performance you experienced instead of a generic “China” motif.
What is better enjoyed during the visit?
Dim sum, roast meats and freshly baked egg tarts are good reasons to sit down and eat. Cured Cantonese sausage also appears frequently in gift lists, but it remains meat regardless of its sealed packaging. We would enjoy the roast-meat meal in Guangzhou and use the gift budget for pastries with appropriate labels or a small craft. Fresh fruit is a separate border-check decision, even when associated with the region.
Which Guangzhou food names are useful at the counter?
Guangzhou’s market regulator explicitly includes chicken biscuits and wife cakes among local shouxin categories. Search 鸡仔饼 and 老婆饼 separately rather than asking for a generic “Cantonese cake.” For a recipe ingredient, use 马蹄粉 and distinguish the dry starch from ready-made 马蹄糕. This turns an old-town bakery browse into a short comparison of three different products, with less need to buy a large mixed box before you know your preference.
How should you plan the shopping stop?
Pair a pastry stop with an existing old-town outing rather than treating shopping as a series of far-flung bakeries. Look at producer details and packaging across two counters. A city-gift collection is useful for discovering categories, while a normal food shop helps you compare everyday sizes. Ask for protection against crushing if your next leg involves a busy train platform and a full backpack.
Use our Guangzhou city walk to combine a short browse with a neighborhood outing. The Guangzhou destination guide helps place it within your wider route.
What should you avoid buying on impulse?
Do not choose pastries by brand recognition alone: fillings and recipes differ within a single range. Avoid repeating claimed medicinal benefits from herbal-drink packaging. A decorative gift and an edible product should each have their own clear description.
What should you check before taking gifts home?
Keep the original ingredients, producer, date and storage instructions. Ask for a receipt and buy a quantity you can protect through the next travel leg. Storage directions belong to the exact product; there is no single shelf-life rule for a city’s specialties.
For international travel, check your destination’s customs or agriculture authority before buying food, seeds, plants, animal products or alcohol. A sealed or vacuum-packed product is not automatic permission to enter. For example, US Customs and Border Protection requires declaration of food and agricultural items; other destinations have their own rules.
