Guilin local specialties give you a choice between fragrant sweets, cooking condiments and the products grouped under the city’s “Three Treasures” name. That name is useful cultural shorthand, not a ready-made packing list. We would choose an osmanthus sweet or a clearly labelled small condiment after tasting, with the next train, flight and border crossing in mind.
Our short list: Choose an osmanthus sweet for a floral tasting gift, chili sauce for a cook, or fermented bean curd for someone who already enjoys strong condiments. Monk fruit is a separate infusion choice. The Three Treasures name helps identify traditions; it is not a reason to buy every item as a set.

What is worth a closer look?
Osmanthus sweets / 桂花糕 / 桂花糖
Osmanthus-themed sweets give a recognizable flavor lead, but the category includes different recipes and textures. A soft fresh cake, a firm packaged confection and a scented syrup need different handling. Ask to taste the exact product and inspect its ingredients; a floral design on the box does not tell you how strongly it will taste of osmanthus.
Before buying: Choose an intact labelled pack in a manageable size. If a product needs cooling, buy only when the rest of the journey can meet those instructions.
Chili sauce / 桂林辣椒酱
Chili sauce is one of the traditional Three Treasures and suits someone who wants a cooking ingredient. Compare garlic, chili and additional ingredients on the label instead of choosing solely by color. Some products may be much hotter or saltier than the sample you expected. A compact container is often more useful for a first purchase than an elaborate set of sauces.
Before buying: Check for allergens and animal ingredients, retain the label and protect the seal against leaks. Confirm carrier restrictions for pastes before deciding where to pack it.
Fermented bean curd / 桂林腐乳
Fermented bean curd is another of the Three Treasures, with a strong flavor that works better as a deliberate gift than a surprise. Ask how the exact product is used and stored. It is a condiment, not a fresh tofu substitute. A recipient unfamiliar with fermented foods may prefer a small pack or an entirely different category.
Before buying: Read for soy, alcohol and other ingredients where present. Check the instructions after opening; do not rely on a general claim that fermentation makes all storage conditions acceptable.
Monk fruit and regional dry goods / 罗汉果
Monk fruit is a regional product that can suit someone interested in making an infusion. It is a different purchase from a ready-made sweetened drink or a powdered mix. Look for an identified producer and a clear description of contents and preparation. Do not treat health claims at a souvenir counter as evidence that it is appropriate for every person.
Before buying: Buy for flavor and curiosity, keeping the original packaging. Check the destination’s plant-product rules before carrying dried fruit or botanical material across a border.
What is better enjoyed during the visit?
Have Guilin rice noodles and fresh local dishes on the trip rather than expecting a souvenir pack to reproduce the same meal. Sanhua liquor, the third of the Three Treasures, can interest an adult who specifically wants it, but alcohol adds carrier and destination questions. We would skip it for a casual group gift and choose a non-alcoholic product with a clear label instead.
What exactly are Guilin’s Three Treasures?
They are Sanhua liquor, chili sauce and fermented bean curd. The Guilin newspaper’s historical account discusses that grouping, while the national IP authority describes Sanhua’s rice-based production. Search 三花酒, 桂林辣椒酱 and 桂林腐乳 separately. Osmanthus sweets and monk fruit are additional regional choices, not replacements within the traditional three. If alcohol does not suit your recipient, choose another gift rather than buying the set for completeness.
How should you plan the shopping stop?
Make a short comparison stop in the city after your main landscape outings. Buying first means carrying jars or fragile sweets on the river and through hotel transfers. Guilin’s tourism product material covers a wider regional selection, including products associated with nearby counties; it does not mean every item on a shelf was grown downtown. Ask where it comes from and how it is prepared.

What should you avoid buying on impulse?
Do not call all Guangxi snacks Guilin specialties: a region-wide gift shelf can mix several local traditions. Avoid medicinal claims about monk fruit, universal shelf-life promises and heavy mixed boxes bought only because they contain all Three Treasures.
What should you check before taking gifts home?
Keep the original ingredients, producer, date and storage instructions. Ask for a receipt and buy a quantity you can protect through the next travel leg. Storage directions belong to the exact product; there is no single shelf-life rule for a city’s specialties.
For international travel, check your destination’s customs or agriculture authority before buying food, seeds, plants, animal products or alcohol. A sealed or vacuum-packed product is not automatic permission to enter. For example, US Customs and Border Protection requires declaration of food and agricultural items; other destinations have their own rules.
