This Dali city walk follows South Gate → Fuxing Road → Honglongjing → Wuhua Tower exterior → Renmin Road. It is a neighborhood outing with time to notice streets, stop for food and change the plan, rather than a full-city sightseeing checklist. Allow 3–4 hours including a meal and short lane detours. Stone paving, small slopes and uneven thresholds; a compact old-town walk rather than a mountain outing.
The research contained both genuine old-town walks and long lake itineraries labeled as day walks. This article keeps the gates-and-lanes route separate from Erhai transport.
We would keep one proper seated break and decide on optional interiors only after checking energy and current entry conditions. The route was developed from an October 12, 2026 review of local walking material and the reference sources below; it is an editorial plan, not a claim that we personally walked every segment.

Save the Chinese names before setting out. Use a current pedestrian map for each connection: a route diagram shows the stop order, not every crossing, accessible entrance or temporary diversion. Exact distance varies with the entrances, lane choices and optional visits you select.
How should you follow the route?
1. Start at the South Gate / 大理古城南门
Make the actual old-town gate your meeting point, not a generic Dali city pin or the railway station. Begin with the exterior and enter on the public street. Gate or tower access is optional and should be checked on the day. Set a relaxed pace from the beginning; cobbles and a small slope can matter more than the apparent compactness of the town on a map.
Next connection: Move north along Fuxing Road / 复兴路, stopping short of trying to cover its entire length.
2. Read the main street along Fuxing Road / 复兴路
The north–south street gives you an orientation spine among the smaller lanes. Look at rooflines, building proportions and the changing shopfronts rather than buying at every stall. Contemporary retail is part of the current old town, so avoid equating every sign or facade with an ancient tradition. We would use one short side-lane pause and keep enough time for the quieter water-side stretch.
Next connection: Turn toward Honglongjing / 红龙井 using public streets, then reorient toward the Wuhua Tower area.
3. Choose a small Honglongjing section / 红龙井
The water-side lane gives the route a change of mood without requiring a trip to Erhai. Keep your visit modest, avoid private thresholds and take care on stone surfaces after rain. Cafes and music venues may have different daytime and evening hours. Choose a seat because it suits your rest needs rather than assuming a particular rooftop or performance will be available.
Next connection: Continue toward the exterior of Wuhua Tower / 五华楼, then the Fuxing–Renmin Road junction.
4. Finish with Wuhua Tower and Renmin Road / 人民路
The tower helps you read the old town’s center before turning into Renmin Road. Exterior viewing is enough; do not promise free climbing or an unobstructed panorama from an old social post. Walk a chosen east–west street section, browse one or two stores and finish with food. The long lake shore belongs to another day, especially if you have already spent several hours on stone paving.
Next connection: Navigate to a legal pickup at an old-town edge. Do not ask a car to enter a restricted lane simply because your cafe pin is inside it.
What is the shorter version?
South Gate, a limited Fuxing Road stretch, then Honglongjing. Choose a nearby rest stop and return to the edge without crossing the whole town.
Choose this version at the start if you have luggage, a tight departure time or limited walking tolerance. A shorter route with a meal and a good street section is still a complete outing. If mobility access matters, confirm individual paths and entrances; this guide does not certify a step-free route.

Where should you stop for food and a rest?
Try a cooked snack such as erkuai or a simple meal, checking ingredients and preparation. Market and cafe posts are discovery leads, not proof of a particular stall’s opening time. Avoid raw or unidentified wild mushrooms; the walk does not need a novelty-food challenge to feel local.
Plan the break before the longest or most exposed section. Take drinking water, comfortable shoes and the weather protection you need. Before ordering, confirm the current menu and any minimum spend; the basic walk does not require buying a tour, booking a terrace or entering a particular cafe.
What should you leave for another outing?
Dali railway station is outside the old town. Erhai, Xizhou and the Three Pagodas are separate outings, not adjacent stops on this city walk.
Optional ticketed interiors, boats and performances need their own current rules and time allowances. Public street access does not establish access to the building beside it. If heavy rain, heat, local works or crowd controls interrupt a segment, use the open public alternative, shorten the walk or take a legal transfer.
How can you walk respectfully?
Stay on public streets and signed paths. Keep doors, market aisles, stairs and narrow bridges clear, ask before photographing people closely, and do not enter residential courtyards or rooftops for a view. A popular photograph is not evidence that a space is open to visitors. Keep the final pickup on a road a vehicle can legally reach.
