Hangzhou local specialties suit a restrained shopping list: tea for someone who drinks it, silk or a fan for someone who will use it, and a pastry to enjoy before leaving. Longjing is the obvious starting point, but a lake-themed box is not proof of tea origin. Our approach is to compare the product, its label and the intended recipient before choosing a presentation style.
Our short list: For a regular tea drinker, compare two Longjing packs with clear origins. For someone who wears scarves, choose by fiber content and color. A folding fan is easier to appreciate when you can explain its maker and use; tea pastries suit a short-term food gift rather than a substitute for leaves.

What is worth a closer look?
Longjing green tea / 龙井茶 / 西湖龙井
Ask what geographic origin the seller is claiming and have it recorded on the pack or receipt. “Longjing” and a specific West Lake origin should not be treated as interchangeable sales descriptions. If tasting is offered, compare two prices and choose the cup you prefer. There is little value in paying for a prestige harvest description that you cannot assess and the recipient does not particularly want.
Before buying: Buy a modest quantity with a named producer, origin and packaging date. Keep the storage instructions and avoid decanting the leaves into an unlabelled souvenir tin.
Silk accessories / 杭州丝绸
A scarf or small pouch is lighter than many decorative gifts. The decision is about actual fiber content and finish: silk, silk blends and printed synthetic fabric can all look attractive from a distance. Hangzhou’s silk tradition provides context, while a garment label tells you what you are buying today. Touch and drape are useful observations, but do not replace the label.
Before buying: Check composition, seams and care instructions. Choose colors the recipient will wear instead of buying a large item solely because a seller calls it ceremonial.
Folding fans / 王星记扇 / 折扇
A fan can be useful as well as decorative. Open and close it gently, inspect the ribs and check that the paper or fabric joins are neat. A printed design and a hand-painted piece deserve different descriptions. Hangzhou’s craft associations make this a relevant category, but the maker and technique of the exact fan still matter.
Before buying: Ask for a sleeve or flat protective box. Avoid forcing the fan into a crowded backpack where the ribs can be bent under heavier purchases.
Lotus-root starch and tea pastries / 西湖藕粉 / 龙井茶点
These offer two different gifts: an ingredient or mix for someone who cooks, and a ready-to-eat sweet for someone who does not. Check whether a lotus-root packet contains added sugar or other starches. For a tea pastry, taste the flavor rather than assuming a green color or leaf-shaped decoration demonstrates a high tea content.
Before buying: Choose a format suited to the journey. Fresh cream-filled products need their own handling; follow the exact package instructions rather than a citywide shelf-life rule.
What is better enjoyed during the visit?
Try freshly made rice sweets or a tea-flavored dessert while you are in Hangzhou. A short bakery stop can show whether the recipient would enjoy that flavor before you buy several boxes. We would put the tasting after a lakeside outing and make the tea purchase a separate, unhurried decision. Tea culture is part of the visit, not simply an obligation to bring home the most expensive leaves.
How can you compare Hangzhou silk, tea and fans?
UNESCO’s Hangzhou profile connects the city with silk production and Longjing tea. For fans, Wangxingji’s own company information provides a maker lead distinct from a generic souvenir stall. Search 王星记扇 and compare the exact fan’s material and construction. Keep the three decisions separate: tea origin, textile fiber and fan craftsmanship require different evidence, even when a shop presents them together as a ready-made Hangzhou gift set.
How should you plan the shopping stop?
A specialist tea counter should be able to explain the specific pack; a silk seller should be able to identify fiber content. Those are different forms of expertise. Compare at least two options within the category you want, without assuming that every market is cheaper or every scenic-area shop is poor. Keep the final shopping stop near the route you are already following rather than crossing the city for a claimed bargain.

What should you avoid buying on impulse?
Skip miracle-grade tea claims, unlabelled silk and dessert boxes whose storage needs do not fit your journey. A photograph of a tea garden establishes a design theme, not traceability. Temple or blessing language is not a substitute for a product description.
What should you check before taking gifts home?
Keep the original ingredients, producer, date and storage instructions. Ask for a receipt and buy a quantity you can protect through the next travel leg. Storage directions belong to the exact product; there is no single shelf-life rule for a city’s specialties.
For international travel, check your destination’s customs or agriculture authority before buying food, seeds, plants, animal products or alcohol. A sealed or vacuum-packed product is not automatic permission to enter. For example, US Customs and Border Protection requires declaration of food and agricultural items; other destinations have their own rules.
