This Lijiang city walk follows Zhongyi Market → Mufu exterior → Sifang Square → Dashiqiao → Waterwheel approach. It is a neighborhood outing with time to notice streets, stop for food and change the plan, rather than a full-city sightseeing checklist. Allow 3–4 hours with food and lane browsing. Uneven stone paving, narrow bridges and small slopes; optional Lion Hill climbs add substantially more effort.
The usable social details centered on market food and old-town navigation. The route uses that southern start and supports the water-and-lanes interpretation with heritage sources.
We would keep one proper seated break and decide on optional interiors only after checking energy and current entry conditions. The route was developed from an October 12, 2026 review of local walking material and the reference sources below; it is an editorial plan, not a claim that we personally walked every segment.

Save the Chinese names before setting out. Use a current pedestrian map for each connection: a route diagram shows the stop order, not every crossing, accessible entrance or temporary diversion. Exact distance varies with the entrances, lane choices and optional visits you select.

How should you follow the route?
1. Begin around Zhongyi Market / 忠义市场
The market is a useful food-first starting point on the southern side of the old town. Shop activity and food-vlog recommendations vary, so look at current stalls and menus rather than expecting a precise past price. Keep clear of customers and ask before photographing people. A seated meal here also reduces the temptation to carry several snacks while navigating the slippery stone lanes.
Next connection: Continue toward the public Mufu approach / 木府. Use a live map for the next lane junction rather than following the first tour group.
2. View the Mufu approach / 木府
The public approach is enough for the basic walk. Entering the compound adds a separately managed cultural visit, and nearby uphill paths can turn a gentle-looking outing into a climb. We would make a deliberate choice between that interior and a longer street walk. The guide does not imply that a temple, guesthouse terrace or courtyard is open simply because it appears in a social photograph.
Next connection: Follow public lanes toward Sifang Square / 四方街, using the water channels and street signs for orientation.
3. Pause at Sifang Square / 四方街
Use the square to reorient and notice the lanes meeting around it. It can be lively and commercial; choose a short pause instead of waiting for a promised performance time. The old town’s heritage includes its urban layout and water system, not just shop signs or a costume-photo session. Respect residents and keep channel edges, bridges and building entrances clear.
Next connection: Continue toward Dashiqiao / 大石桥. This is a small lane connection, so slow down at crowded junctions.
4. Finish through Dashiqiao toward the waterwheels
The bridge and water channels give a good final theme before the northern arrival area. Choose a small public lane connection and continue toward the large waterwheel landmark. Do not detour up every hillside photo route; rooftops and viewing terraces may be private or separately managed. Wet cobbles can be slippery, and the altitude can make a busy afternoon feel more tiring than its distance suggests.
Next connection: Leave at the northern old-town edge for a legal pickup. Allow extra time if your hotel requires another walk through lanes with luggage.
What is the shorter version?
Zhongyi Market, the public Mufu approach and a limited section toward Sifang Square. Exit at a nearby accessible old-town edge.
Choose this version at the start if you have luggage, a tight departure time or limited walking tolerance. A shorter route with a meal and a good street section is still a complete outing. If mobility access matters, confirm individual paths and entrances; this guide does not certify a step-free route.
Where should you stop for food and a rest?
Choose prepared erkuai, rice noodles or another cooked meal at the market, checking the ingredients and final price before ordering. Keep the meal simple rather than following every food-vlog stop. If you choose mushrooms, use a reputable cooked-food restaurant and follow its preparation guidance; never sample unknown raw mushrooms.
Plan the break before the longest or most exposed section. Take drinking water, comfortable shoes and the weather protection you need. Before ordering, confirm the current menu and any minimum spend; the basic walk does not require buying a tour, booking a terrace or entering a particular cafe.
What should you leave for another outing?
Baisha, Shuhe and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are separate outings. This street-level line does not include the Lion Hill climb or promise a snow-mountain view.
Optional ticketed interiors, boats and performances need their own current rules and time allowances. Public street access does not establish access to the building beside it. If heavy rain, heat, local works or crowd controls interrupt a segment, use the open public alternative, shorten the walk or take a legal transfer.
How can you walk respectfully?
Stay on public streets and signed paths. Keep doors, market aisles, stairs and narrow bridges clear, ask before photographing people closely, and do not enter residential courtyards or rooftops for a view. A popular photograph is not evidence that a space is open to visitors. Keep the final pickup on a road a vehicle can legally reach.
